El Teatro Campesino began in 1965 with short performances in the fields of California's Central Valley for audiences of farmworkers. By 1970 the Teatro had gained an international reputation and had inspired the formation of many other Chicano/Hispanic theater companies. Huerta, Jorge A.

Jorge Alfonso Huerta was born in Southern California on November 20, 1942. He attended California State University, Los Angeles, earning his degree in 1965. Huerta went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1974, becoming the first Chicano nationwide to receive his Ph.D. in theatre.
